Don Letts - Crucial Vinyl: The Jam - All Mod Cons
Don selects the Jam's 1978 classic All Mod Cons as his Crucial Vinyl this week. Don admits that he came late to this album, as, back in the punk days, the band, in their mod suits, were considered outsiders. Don says, "Now I discovered this album late - way late. It was only after I was asked to make a film about the making of the Jam's All Mod Cons that I realised what a great British record I'd missed. Still, better late than never... All Mod Cons was the trio's third album. It was released in November 1978, just eighteen months after their debut. Now you can't deny the obvious 60's British invasion pop influences, but that was only part of its strength. What was familiar territory to my ears was also invigorated by the punk energy of the late 70s. Along with anthemic tunes such as A-bomb in Wardour Street and Down in the Tube Station at Midnight, were emotive cuts like English Rose, all of which testify to Paul Weller's writing skills. At the time of All Mod Cons' release, I was pre-occupied with the likes of the Clash, so I missed out on what is without doubt a great record. In fact it was only in 2005, some 35 years after its release, that I really got into it - talk about standing the test of time!" As ever, the Don's other selections cross time, space and genre.

Don Letts - Crucial Vinyl: Talking Heads - Remain in Light
Don Letts' Crucial Vinyl feature returns this week. He picks an album that has moved him and helped shape his musical taste. He plays three tracks from it and explains why the album means so much to him. This week he selects Remain In Light by Talking Heads. Released in 1980, it was the band's fourth album. Don says: "One of the best albums to come out of the 80s. Remain In Light was produced by long-time collaborator Brian Eno and utilised African poly-rhythms, samples and loops which was quite innovative back in those days. To me, Remain In Light was a seamless blend of different styles and that resulted in a very individual and refreshing sound - definitely a must-.

Don Letts - Crucial Vinyl - The Slits
Each week Don selects a piece of Crucial Vinyl (an album that has shaped his musical taste and helped make him who he is). He features three tracks from it and explains why it means so much to him. This week he picks Cut, the 1979 release by the Slits. Don says, "The debut album from last of the first wave UK punk rockers to get signed up. Sonically, this was really the first 'post punk' record. It mixed reggae bass lines with avant-garde jazz and a dash of old school punk rock. It wasn't bound by the musical cliches that defined so many of the other bands of the time, and consequently, to this very day, it has its own distinct sound and identity.".

This week he picks Hot Buttered Soul by Isaac Hayes. Released in 1969, it was Isaac's second album. Don says, "Another one my older brothers hipped me to because I was only 13 when this soul masterpiece caught my ear. It's innovative production was so sonically revolutionary that it captured the imagination of rock audiences too. It's Henry Rollins's favourite soul record!".

This week he picks Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols. Don says, "This is the album that kicked started a scene and created a cultural ground zero in 1977. Without doubt the daddy of the UK punk movement, and when you put it on today, it still has the same effect it had back then - possibly even more so.".

Don Letts - Crucial Vinyl: The Congos
Each week Don selects a piece of Crucial Vinyl (an album that has shaped his musical taste and helped make him who he is). He features three tracks from it and explains why it means so much to him. This week he picks Heart of the Congos, the classic 1977 release by Jamaican roots reggae band the Congos. The album was produced by the genius Lee 'Scratch' Perry in his backyard studio the Black Ark in Kingston, Jamaica. As well as the beautiful vocals of Cedric Myton and Roy "Ashanti" Johnson, the album featured musicians such as Ernest Ranglin, Boris Gardiner and Sly Dunbar. It was another album that appealed strongly to some of the punks for whom Don was DJing at the UK's first punk club The Roxy in 1977.

Don Letts - Crucial Vinyl: Kraftwerk
Each week Don selects a piece of Crucial Vinyl - an album that has inspired him and shaped his taste in music. This week he picks pioneering German band Kraftwerk's 1977 release Trans-Europe Express. Recorded in Dusseldorf at the band's mysterious Kling Klang studio, it was the band's sixth album. Its innovative electronic sounds were first heard when punk rock was at its peak it the UK, and went on to influence a wide range of artists from many different genres.

Don Letts - Crucial Vinyl: Patti Smith - Horses
Each week Don selects a piece of Crucial Vinyl (an album that has shaped his musical taste and helped make him who he is). He features three tracks from it and explains why it means so much to him. This week he chooses Horses by Patti Smith. Don says, "Patti Smith is rightly credited as being a major inspiration for the New York punk scene. Her debut album Horses in 1975 influenced everyone, as it coincided with the emerging UK punk scene too. Its impact on women everywhere was obvious, but it struck men too - particularly me. I saw Patti live at The Roundhouse in London in 1976, and soon afterwards she stumbled into my shop Acme Attractions on the Kings Road. She liked my dub reggae soundtrack and mentioned that she was a fan of Tapper Zukie, who happened to be a mate of mine. Cut to yours truly live on stage at the Hammersmith Odeon a few months later with a mic in my hand, Patti writhing at my feet and Tapper Zukie on guitar. Patti had asked us along to see her show, and suddenly, without warning, dragged us on stage in front of a packed house not knowing I'd never been on stage, much less held a mic, and Tapper couldn't play guitar. Talk about punk rock!".

Don Letts - Crucial Vinyl: The Clash - London Calling
Each week Don selects a piece of Crucial Vinyl (an album that has shaped his musical taste and helped make him who he is). He features three tracks from it and explains why it means so much to him. This week he picks London Calling, the third album released by his friends The Clash. Don says, 'The record Rolling Stone magazine voted album of the decade in the eighties (even though it was released in 1979!). Now I could have easily chosen The Clash's debut album, as it's hard to think of a better musical statement of intent. But I went for this album for a couple of reasons: besides the fact I directed the video for the London Calling single, I chose this record because, not only was it a quantum leap from their debut release, but it was also a quantum leap from punk itself, which, by this time, had painted itself into a corner - you can't do this, you can't wear that. Punk was never about nihilism and negativity. It was about empowerment and freedom: personal and musical. Reflecting the individual band members' tastes, this record's culture clash of musical styles embraced these ideals like no other punk record from the period.

Don Letts - Crucial Vinyl: Culture's Two Sevens Clash
Each week Don selects a piece of Crucial Vinyl (an album that has shaped his musical taste and helped make him who he is). He features three tracks and explains why it means so much to him. This week he picks Culture's 1977 debut album Two Sevens Clash, produced in Kingston, Jamaica by Joe Gibbs. Don says, 'Culture's Two Sevens Clash is a must-have for the original cover alone, and the band is another great example of the three-piece vocal harmony groups that were so popular in Jamaica. The album's release coincided with the punk explosion in the UK, and the title track really captured the punks' imaginations. Two Seven Clash refers to Marcus Garvey's apocalyptic prophecy that there would be chaos on the 7th of July 1977, when the sevens 'met'. This took on a whole other meaning for punks and the track provided the perfect soundtrack to their cultural ground zero.' As ever, Don's other selections cross time, space and genre.

Don Letts - Crucial Vinyl: James Brown's Get on the Good Foot
Each week Don selects a piece of Crucial Vinyl (an album that has shaped his musical taste and helped make him who he is). He features three tracks from it and explains why it means so much to him. This week he picks James Brown's 1972 release Get on the Good Foot. Don says, "James Brown had already grabbed my attention with cuts like 'Say it Loud I'm Black and I Proud' released during the height of civil rights movement of the late 60s. To a degree, by 1972, the social/political climate had chilled; brothers were starting to party, and I was sporting an Angela Davis style afro. And, with titles like I Got a Bag of My Own', The Whole World Needs Liberation and Get on the Good Foot, it was James Brown who provided the soundtrack to these transitional times." As ever, Don's other selections cross time, space and genre.

Don Letts - Crucial Vinyl: Rod Stewart's Every Picture Tells a Story
Each week Don selects a piece of Crucial Vinyl (an album that has shaped his musical taste and helped make him who he is). He features three tracks from it and explains why it means so much to him. This week he picks Rod Stewart's third solo album Every Picture Tells a Story, released in 1971. Don says, "I remember seeing Rod Stewart and The Faces in 1971 at the Oval in South London in a line-up that included The Who, Mott the Hoople, Lindisfarne and Quintessence. I would have been 15 years old at the time - a crucial period in my life as music and fashion were all-consuming and Rod Stewart certainly had that combination down. Now this memorable outdoor show came just after the release of the Every Picture Tells a Story album, which included a version of Tim Hardin's haunting Reason to Believe, plus Mandolin Wind and one of my favourite tunes of all time, Maggie May. In fact the single of Maggie May remains on my prized 1960 Rock-Ola Jukebox to this very day." As ever, Don's other selections cross time, space and genre.

As part of the BBC's Sound of Style series, Don Letts selects songs and tells tales illustrating his unique path through evolving trends in music and fashion from the 60s to the present day. Don's eclectic taste and style takes in everything from the Jamaican ska his father played at dances, though rock, soul, funk, disco, punk, dub and hip hop to the dubstep his son (a third generation DJ) plays and beyond.

This week he picks Gil Scott-Heron's 1971 release Pieces of a Man. Don made a documentary about Gil and says, "This was the American jazz and soul poet's debut studio album and his first collaboration with Brian Jackson. Its innovative blend of soul, jazz, funk and poetry are a clear influence on later dance, rap and hip-hop music".

Don Letts - Crucial Vinyl: Beggars Banquet by The Rolling Stones
Each week Don selects a piece of Crucial Vinyl (an album that has shaped his musical taste and helped make him who he is). He features three tracks from it and explains why it means so much to him. This week he picks Beggars Banquet released by The Rolling Stones in 1968. Don says, "As a young kid I was already hip to the Stones through their singles, but Beggars Banquet came into my life via my father, St. Ledger Letts, who walked in with it tucked under his arm one day! Now even at the tender age of 12 I realised that this was totally out of character for him, as his taste at that time included artists such as Nat King Cole, Toots and the Maytal and Jim Reeves. He passed away some years ago, and I never did ask him what possessed him to buy it. But I distinctly remember being totally captivated by tracks like Street Fighting Man and Sympathy for The Devil." Don's other selections include Keith Hudson, The XX, Sun Ra and Anna Calvi.

Don Letts - Crucial Vinyl: Satta Massagana by The Abyssinians
Each week Don selects a piece of Crucial Vinyl (an album that has shaped his musical taste and helped make him who he is). He features three tracks from it and explains why it means so much to him. This week he picks Satta Massagana, the 1976 debut album by The Abyssinians. Don says, "It's a classic and legendary roots reggae album showcasing the vocal harmony style that became so popular in Jamaica. It nearly never saw the light of day, as it was originally recorded for Coxsone Dodd's Studio One in 1969, but he refused to release it as he considered it culturally subversive. The Abyssinians bought the master tapes back from Coxsone for £90, and, since it's release in various forms over the coming years, its tight, beautiful and uplifting harmonies were adopted as hymns to be used by Rastafarians during their services". Don's other selections cross time, space and genre.

Don Letts - Crucial Vinyl: Smokey by Smokey Robinson
Each week Don selects a piece of Crucial Vinyl (an album that has shaped his musical taste and helped make him who he is). He features three tracks from it and explains why it means so much to him. This week he picks Smokey Robinson's debut solo album. Don says, 'This one nearly slipped through my musical memory net! Smokey Robinson's debut solo album, simply titled 'Smokey', was released in 1973, and was his first solo venture after leaving Motown soul supergroup The Miracles. They were seriously tough act to follow, since they'd had a string of hits, and were one of the most influential outfits in pop and r 'n' b history. This album saw Smokey Robinson take his place alongside label mates Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder, not only as a master of emotive love songs, but also as someone who was tuned in to the social /political climate of the times - and all delivered by a man with a voice for whom the term 'dulcet tones' could have been conceived.' Don's other selections cross time, space and genre and include Ed Rome, Sebastien Tellier, John Holt, Evy Jane and Hoagy Carmichael.

Don Letts - Crucial Vinyl: David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust
Each week Don selects a piece of Crucial Vinyl (an album that has shaped his musical taste and helped make him who he is). He features three tracks from it and explains why it means so much to him. This week he picks David Bowie's fifth album, the 1972 classic The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Don says, 'Back then, David Bowie was an artist that definitely polarised rock audiences. The whole glam rock and sexual exploration thing freaked a lot of people out back in 1972 (check his Top of the Pops performance of Starman), but it also made some of us more interested. I was just 17 when I took my girlfriend to see David Bowie at The Gaumont in Kilburn, London on June 13th 1973 (part of the Ziggy Stardust tour). Needless to say, she was most impressed with my left-of-centre taste, and the show remains one of my live classics. Bowie even returned the compliment when he came to see my old band Big Audio Dynamite play in New York in 1987!' As ever, Don's other selections cross time, space and genre. Don Letts - Crucial Vinyl: Axis: Bold as Love by The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Each week the Don selects a piece of Crucial Vinyl (an album that has shaped his musical taste and helped to make him who he is). He features three tracks from it and explains why it means so much to him. This week he picks Axis: Bold as Love, the second album by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Released in the UK in December 1967, the album fused blues and psychedelia and showed Jimi maturing as a songwriter. Hendrix took a break from recording the album in the UK to fly to the US to perform at the Monterey Festival. He stole the show and his career in his home country was launched in a most spectacular fashion. Jimi Hendrix's music and striking image made a deep impression on Don, who was 11 at the time. He was living in Brixton, south London and had just started at a school where he was the only black kid.

Don Letts - Japan and Crucial Vinyl: Marcus Garvey by Burning Spear
Don reflects on his recent trip to Japan and selects Burning Spear's 1975 classic Marcus Garvey as this week's Crucial Vinyl (an album that has shaped his musical taste and helped to make him who he is). He features three tracks from it and explains why it means so much to him. Named after the Jamaican national hero and prophet of the Rastafarian faith, who was born in Jamaica in 1887 and died in London in 1940, Burning Spear's album was released in the UK on the Island label in 1975. A dub version entitled Garvey's Ghost came out a few months later. Around this time, Don was getting started as a DJ in London, initially playing dub reggae at the fashionable clothes shop Acme Attractions in London's Kings Road, where he worked. At the end of 1976 Don went on to DJ at the Roxy club in Covent Garden. Between frantic live sets by the likes of the Clash, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Generation X, Don would spin reggae records. Back then, hardly any punk records had been made. Somehow, many of the punks in the small, sweaty club had affinity with reggae and Don's unlikely blend really worked. The mellower yet rebellious reggae sounds appealed to the young crowd and provided a welcome break from the thrash of live punk rock. The punks were provided with a very cool alternative soundtrack and a lasting bond was formed. Don gathered an enviable collection of hard-to-find reggae vinyl, and, as well as DJ-ing, he would compile mixtapes for his friends, who included the Clash, the Slits and John Lydon of the Sex Pistols.

Each week the Don selects a piece of Crucial Vinyl (an album that has shaped his musical taste and helped to make him who he is) from his collection. He features three tracks from it and explains how he first came across it and why it means so much to him. This week Don's choice is Bob Dylan's 1966 classic double album Blonde on Blonde. Recorded in Nashville, it was the first double album of its kind. It made a great impact from its opening song Rainy Day Women, with it's 'Everybody must get stoned' chorus, through to the epic final song Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands, which, at over 11 minutes long, took up the whole of side four. Don's other selections include Marcia Griffiths, Parlour Flames, Alton Ellis and Kate Tempest.

He features three tracks from it and explains why it means so much to him. This week he picks Burning Spear's political and hugely influential L.P. Marcus Garvey. Named after the Jamaican national hero and prophet of the Rastafarian faith, who was born in Jamaica in 1887 and died in London in 1940, Burning Spear's album was released in the UK on the Island label in 1975. A dub version entitled Garvey's Ghost came out a few months later. The mellower, but still rebellious, reggae sounds appealed to the young crowd and provided a welcome break from the thrash of punk. Many of the young punks loved this very cool alternative soundtrack and a lasting bond was formed. He features three tracks from it and explains why it means so much to him. This week he picks Curtis Mayfield's 1970 debut solo album Curtis. Curtis began work on this album when he was still a member of the Impressions. By this time he was ready to move on from the pop feel towards funk and psychedelia. He was also becoming more acutely aware of and vocal about the social and political changes that were taking place in the US at the time. He features three tracks from it and explains why it means so much to him. This week he picks George Harrison's epic triple album All Things Must Pass. Released in 1970, it was the ex-Beatles' third solo release and contains many songs he'd been stockpiling since 1966, that he hadn't been able to get included on Beatles records. Don was a keen fan of the Beatles and at one time owned one of the largest collections of Beatles memorabilia in the UK. Don's other selections cross time, space and genre as ever and include Lee Scratch Perry, Owen Pallett, Sun Ra and Russian Red.

Born in Trenchtwon in Kingston in 1949, Big Youth once said that, "Deejays were closest to the people because there wasn't any kind of establishment control on the sound systems". Lou Reed's 1972 classic Transformer was Lou's second solo album following the break-up of the Velvet Underground. It elevated him from cult hero to big star. Recorded in London, produced by David Bowie and guitarist Mick Ronson and sporting an iconic Mick Rock monochrome portrait of Reed on the cover, Transformer contains Vicious, Perfect Day, Walk on the Wild Side and Satellite of Love. It remains as influential today as it was on Don's generation and friends, some of whom went on to form punk bands.

This week's the Don Crucial Vinyl (a personal choice of album that is dear to him and has shaped his musical taste) is Stevie Wonder's 1972 release Music of My Mind. Released in 1972, when Stevie was 21 (and Don was 16), this landmark release was the beginning of Stevie's golden period of albums (Talking Book, Innervisions, Fulfillingness' First Finale, Songs in the Key of Life). Apart from trombone and guitar, Stevie played all the instruments himself, including various synthesisers. The album made a big impression on Don back in 1972, and was a fixture on his turntable for much of that year. Don's other selections, as ever, cross time, space and genre.

Don Letts - Sound of Cinema special
The BBC's Sound of Cinema season celebrates the great movie soundtracks. The season features a major BBC Four series and programmes across BBC radio. 6 Music will be supporting the season over the next few weeks with some special shows. Don Letts has been directing films since 1978, when he made The Punk Rock Movie using footage of bands he'd gathered on a Super 8 camera. He went on to direct videos for The Clash, Bob Marley and others. He has also directed many TV documentaries on music and popular culture, as well as feature films including Dancehall Queen. In his band Big Audio Dynamite, Don was a pioneer of sampling clips of film dialogue to enhance songs. As part of the Sound of Cinema season Don presents a special programme featuring some of his favourite movie soundtrack moments and sharing some of his ideas about the role that music plays in film.

Don Letts - Culture Clash Radio - The Don's selections cross time, space and genre
Don Letts began his career as a DJ in 1976 at London's first punk club, The Roxy. In those early days, very few punk records had been released, so, between energetic live sets by the likes of Buzzcocks, Siouxsie and the Banshees and his friends The Clash, Don was able to convert the young punk fans to Jamaican music by playing them his own collection of dub and reggae. Don's more laid-back soundtrack provided a welcome break from the frenzied punk sets and, as the two cultures clashed, a lasting allegiance was formed. Embracing punk's D.I.Y. ethos, Don began filming the bands at The Roxy and compiled the footage into his first film, The Punk Rock Movie. Don went on to direct hundreds of pop videos for a variety of artists, including Bob Marley and The Clash. In 2003 he won a Grammy for his Clash film Westway to the World. He has made acclaimed documentaries on the likes of Gil Scott-Heron, Sun Ra and George Clinton, as well as the feature films Dancehall Queen and One Love. Don has also enjoyed a parallel career as a musician, most notably with the innovative Big Audio Dynamite, which he formed with Mick Jones of The Clash in 1984. He has been responsible for a number of sought-after compilation CDs and continues to DJ at clubs and festivals, including Glastonbury and Latitude. Every week he brings his unique credentials to BBC Radio 6 Music in a show that is unlimited by musical boundaries and which, as he says, 'crosses time, space and genre'. On Bank Holiday Monday 26th August he celebrates the sounds of the annual Notting Hill Carnival and in September, as part of the BBC's Sound of Cinema season, Don features some of his favourite movie soundtrack moments and shares some of his ideas about the role that music plays in film.

Don Letts - 25/06/2012
When the UK's first punk club The Roxy opened in London on New Year's Day in 1977, Don Letts was employed as resident DJ to play records between live sets from the likes of The Clash, The Damned and Buzzcocks. In those early days hardly any punk records had been released, so Don entertained the young punks by playing his own selection of dub reggae by the likes of Augustus Pablo and Lee Scratch Perry plus influential tracks from bands such as The New York Dolls and The Ramones. As the punk musicians and fans rubbed shoulders with Don and his rasta brethren, who worked in this dingy Covent Garden basement as barmen and bouncers, an extraordinary cultural exchange took place. Don's Jamaican dub selections provided a welcome break from the frenetic punk sets and an unexpected but influential allegiance formed between the new movement and the equally rebellious and oppressed reggae community. The club only remained open for 100 nights, but played an important part in the development of punk. In this two-hour special Don tells the story of this heady time, provides his own insights and plays the same records he span on the single turntable at the Roxy when he provided the soundtrack for a punky reggae party, the influence of which spread wide and can still be felt today.

Don Letts - Big Audio Dynamite Special (part 2)
The second of two special programmes in which Don Letts tells the story of Big Audio Dynamite - the innovative band he formed in 1984 with former Clash guitarist Mick Jones. The band's sound was unique and ahead of its time and Don's use of sampling of speech clips from films and sound effects enhanced the music greatly. Big Audio Dynamite went on to achieve great success with such songs as E=MC2 and Medicine Show but split up in 1990. Fortunately they remained on good terms and have reformed to tour and playing festivals around the world this year.
