On June 1973, during a party, Wyatt fell from a fourth-floor window and was paralysed from the waist down. Confined to a wheelchair and unable to play the drums Wyatt reinvented himself as a singer and composer signalling the start of his colourful solo career furthering his experiments deeper into the world of jazz. He has collaborated with a variety of artists including Gilad Atzmon, Bjork, Carla Bley, Steve Swallow, Brian Eno and Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour. There has been renewed interest in his work with the re-release of many of his albums and the recent publication of 'Different Every Time: The Authorised Biography of Robert Wyatt' by Marcus O'Dair.

In the last 10 years he has achieved recording success with his present trio (featuring Palle Danielsson and Martin France) which recently also recorded with saxophonist Julian Argüelles. He has also played (and recorded) solo performances in Europe, Australia, USA and Canada as well as duet concerts with Kenny Wheeler and Italian vocalist Diana Torto which included commissioned arrangements for the WDR Big Band. Jazz Line-Up - Stan Kenton Celebration
Julian Joseph presents an all Stan Kenton special programme for what would have been the bandleader's and composer's 100th Birthday. The augmented BBC Big Band conducted by Jiggs Whigham are in concert at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester to play Kenton's band classics, arranged by his star band members of Bill Russo, Johnny Richards and Bill Holman. As Whigham explains on the programme, Kenton was an encouraging bandleader and never stopped giving his players the opportunity to write and arrange for the band. This programme includes Kenton evergreens such as Bill Russo's "Frank Speaking" and Johnny Richards arrangements of "Speak Low " and "Stella by Starlight", a feature for Bass Trombone, a rarity in itself. The second half the concert is a complete performance of "West Side Story" - another Johnny Richards epic when the band are augmented by French Horns and Tuba. As Julian Joseph points out, all this just a few days before what would have been Kenton's 100th Birthday. Nevertheless the audience at the Old Fruit Market were treated to a soulful selection of tunes with the trio of Florian Weber, piano. Jeff Denson, bass and Ziv Ravitz, drums. Stanko ( who said very little during the set) took us through classics such as "Dark Eyes" Stella by Starlight "and "On Green Dolphin Street" Stanko approaches each tune as if its just appeared on the page and his fine trio fit him like a glove. A compelling listen.

Jazz Line-Up - Gwilym Simcock at Kings Place
Gwilym Simcock is a busy man currently enjoying his recent Mercury Music Prize nomination for his latest recording "Good Days at Schloss Elmau" on the ACT label. The nomination honours a performer at the height of his musical powers. He has truly evolved and transcended his position as Radio 3's first New Generation Jazz Artist and "The Elmau" recording showcases his solo piano virtuosity and follows on from his solo, duo & trio recording "Blues Vignette", the album where he first revealed his latest working trio. Like many of the most accomplished jazzmen Gwilym thrives on collaboration and recently sparkled in duet with star vocalist Cleveland Watkiss as part of his piano/vocal series at the Pheasantry in Chelsea. The Anglo - American quartet "The Impossible Gentlemen" features the pianist on a recording of the same name with Mike Walker, Adam Nussbaum and Steve Swallow and showcases an exciting band currently wowing audiences at all the international jazz festivals. But it is his regular working trio that Jazz Line-Up feature with Russian bassist Yuri Goloubev and British drummer James Maddren. This trio is at the heart of Gwilym's musical vision and today he invites his long-time collaborator and special guest from "Acoustic Triangle" Tim Garland on saxophone. Julian Joseph presents.

In this unique concert for Jazz Line-Up, Julian Joseph presents Jazz Line-Up from the BBC, Maida Vale studios in London, where Stan Sulzmann plays a special concert with his band Neon, featuring himself on Reeds, Kit Downes, Piano, Jim Hart, Vibes and Tim Giles, Drums. In the second half of the concert he augments the band with Mike Walker on Guitar, Dave Whitford on Bass, James Allsop on Bass Clarinet and a very special appearance form UK British trumpet legend Kenny Wheeler. Stan Sulzmann is a well-known and respected figure on the British Jazz scene who has always strived to remain contemporary. He emerged in the 1960s with a crop of talented musicians including Graham Collier, John Taylor, Kenny Wheeler and Gordon Beck. As recording artist bandleader and educator, Stan is a young veteran, possibly an oxymoron, but eminence is a difficult thing to put into words. He's an artist of great dignity who is often the first choice saxophonist for many of the emerging stars of the British contemporary jazz scene. Gwilym Simcock is a massive fan, advocate and collaborator and his Neon quartet co-led with some of the finest young musicians playing in Britain today, is a clear example of how revered a musician Stan Sulzmann is.

Jazz Line-Up - Jacqui Dankworth
In this interview with Julian Joseph on Jazz Line-Up, Jacqui Dankworth speaks openly and passionately about how her late father, John Dankworth, inspired her in her development as a singer. Jacqui is also an actress and has and still does appear on the large and small screen. But it's Jazz where she feels at home still performing with her mother, Cleo Laine. Jacqui made this album "It Happens Quietly" in collaboration with her father and guides us though what was a difficult process of laying vocal tracks on the already recorded rhythm tracks from her dad, especially as you can hear him counting in the band at the start of the numbers, they leave the count in on the CD for one of the tracks in his memory. Jacqui has the best of British jazz on this album including her musical director Malcolm Edmunston, Tim Garland on reeds, Steve Brown, drums, her brother Alec on bass and Ben Davis on cello on one track.

Jazz Line-Up - Gary Burton
Its often overlooked that Gary Burton performed with George Shearing and subsequently Stan Getz, with whom he worked from 1964-1966. As a member of Getz's quartet, Burton won Down Beat magazine's Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition Award in 1965. He formed his own quartet in 1967, and Burton's first quartet attracted large audiences from both sides of the jazz-rock spectrum. The double-CD live concert recording with Chick Corea, 'The New Crystal Silence', came out in 2008, giving him his sixth Grammy for Gary Burton at the 2009 Grammy Awards and here in 2011 saw the release of 'Common Ground', Gary's first release on Mack Avenue Records featuring the New Gary Burton Quartet. The new group reunites this Vibes legend with guitar star Julian Lage with the addition of drummer Antonio Sanchez and bassist Scott Colley. Jazz Line-Up is presented this week by Julian Joseph.

Jazz Line-Up celebrates the 70th birthday of one of the UK's most cherished jazz musicians, trumpeter Henry Lowther. In this unique event, Henry has assembled exclusively for Jazz Line-Up two of his ensembles who allow him to perform his wide repertoire of styles namely his "Great Wee Band" and "Still Waters". In "Still Waters", the music is more free and allows expression with very little form whereas the "Great Wee Band" - incidentally a name coined by the guitarist Jim Mullen - is more straight ahead and plays around with standards but once again has room for Henry to develop the themes. The programme was recorded before an invited audience at the BBC's Maida Vale studios and is introduced by Julian Joseph. "Still Waters" Henry Lowther (Trumpet), Pete Hurt (Sax), Ian Thomas (Drums), Peter Saberton (Piano), Dave Green (Bass) "The Great Wee Band" Henry Lowther (Trumpet), Stu Butterfield (Drums), Jim Mullen (Guitar), Dave Green (Bass).

Jazz Line-Up - Younee and Alex Hutton
At the Pizza Express Jazz Club, London in April of this year, Korean pianist Younee was joined by jazz pianist Alex Hutton as part of the Steinway Festival. The hour-long set had many highlights, among which were Alex Hutton's two numbers, 'The Ballad of Beautiful' and 'Silent Man', the arrangement of Bach's 'Siciliano' and Younee's own 'True to You'. Hutton sat out the first half of the song before returning to the keyboard to provide some inspired jazz embellishments to Younee's rock harmonies. An unusual item was a Korean folk song, 'Birds Birds', both pianos delicately played. This set was recorded on a Saturday lunchtime and attracted a substantial crowd . Younee, from Seoul, Korea is 'beyond category' as a singer, songwriter and pianist. Her exquisitely vulnerable voice can also express raw power. Alex Hutton is Yorkshire born, but has spent time in the US both studying and performing. In this session, he gave some impeccable answering phrases to Younee and there's a fine chance to hear some of his own composition.

Jazz Line-Up - Bobby McFerrin
Jazz Line-Up's centrepiece this week is an extended interview with star vocalist Bobby McFerrin. Not surprisingly his parents were both classical singers who supported young Bobby's study of musical theory at age six. Throughout his high school years in Los Angeles the piano was his primary instrument. His inspiration to sing was first channelled into piano and voice jazz improvisations. Then in 1983 he began to give a cappella solo performances, which led to a tour in Germany where he received tremendous acclaim. In short order, due to numerous appearances on Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion, where he was a treasured guest, combining his talents with numerous artists such as Manhattan Transfer, Herbie Hancock, Jon Hendricks and Robin Williams he became a well known creative luminary. His conversation with Kevin LeGendre will include extracts from his current CD.
