World on 3 - Lopa Kothari - Fuego in Session, BBC Introducing
Lopa Kothari with tracks from across the globe, plus a live session with Argentina's Quarteto Fuego and Jesus Hidalgo, plus BBC Introducing comes to World on 3. Quarteto Fuego, Argentina's 'Fire Quartet', consists of four young players bringing a contemporary approach to tango - bandoneon player Clemente Carrascal, violinist Christine Brebes, pianist Matias Feigin and bass player Facundo Benavidez. Singer Jesus Hildago has become something of a national icon in Argentina, having sung a version of their national anthem with Mercedes Sosa in 2008. They are currently performing with the Tango Fire Company at the Peacock Theatre in London. BBC Introducing, the BBC's new talent scheme which gives undiscovered and unsigned music artists a platform, will for the first time feature world music in 2015, through working with World on 3. Lopa Kothari writes: "Are you a brilliant Turkish saz player living in London? Or maybe a fine traditional Sufi singer in Birmingham? Perhaps you have a whole new take on folk roots music? You might be famous in your own community, but how do you get heard beyond that? The answer could be the BBC Introducing Uploader. Since 2007 BBC Introducing has done a great job of picking up and promoting new talent across the UK, well supported by both BBC local and BBC network stations. But not all music fits into the music policy of the national stations. So this is where World on 3 comes in. The World on 3 team will listen to every submission. If we like what you upload, you could hear it being played on the programme. We might even ask you to come in and play live on air. And who knows, there may be a chance to play on the BBC stage at Womad, the most prestigious world music festival around. If BBC Introducing had been around in my day this is just the thing that would have given me and my band a chance to be heard across the UK and who knows maybe all over the World! So, go on, upload your stuff to BBC Introducing and open up your music to a whole new world of possibilities.".

World on 3 - Celtic Connections: Mary Ann Kennedy Live from Celtic Connections 2
Mary Ann Kennedy live from Glasgow at one of the world's biggest winter music festivals, with special late-night performances from the CCA, the BBC's hub on Sauchiehall Street. On the line-up tonight is one of world music's classic bands, Taraf de Haidouks, who for 25 years have taken the energy and intensity of Romanian gipsy music to the world; Songhoy Blues, a young desert blues punk band from Timbuktu in Mali; and Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino from southern Italy, one of the country's oldest folk bands but now in its second generation, refreshing the songs and dances of Puglia's pizzica and tarantella traditions. Celtic Connections is held in 20 venues over 18 days with 300 events taking place throughout the whole festival, involving over two thousand musicians from 26 countries. Scots and Irish Celtic music is at the centre of the festival, but it has always embraced the music of the Celtic cultures of the USA, Canada, France and Spain, together with the closely connected cultures of Scandinavia and eastern Europe. In recent years the Festival has also connected with traditions across Africa and Asia. The concerts range from the most traditional to the most experimental, all brought together in the context of one of the world's liveliest folk cultures, with a never-ending stream of young Scottish musicians who are reinventing their own traditions for their own time. This is the second of two live late-night sessions from Glasgow's Centre for Contemporary Arts, each featuring some of the best acts from the Festival. It is part of BBC Music's extensive coverage of Celtic Connections, also featuring on BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio Scotland, BBC2 TV in Scotland, and BBC Music Online. Tickets available from the BBC Tickets website from Friday 16th January.

World on 3 - Mary Ann Kennedy - Ewan McLennan in Session
Mary Ann Kennedy with new tracks from across the globe, plus a live studio session with Scottish singer Ewan McLennan. Ewan McLennan's last album was chosen by Mojo magazine as one of the top ten albums of 2010 - his new album,''Stories Still Untold', has just been released. He was brought up in Edinburgh, and was classically trained on the piano - however, his family was imbued with Scottish folk culture, and his ideas on introducing folk-style improvisation into Chopin was not well received by his teachers. He then turned to classical guitar, and worked up a formidable technique. All this produced an individual approach to folk music, reviving sometimes well known, sometimes long-forgotten songs and presenting them in a new light. He also writes his own songs, reflecting present-day concerns: he says, "One of the songs from my album, 'The Last Bird to Sing', is about the ex-soldier and conscientious objector that I got to know ; Joe Glenton. Not only is his story inspiring but it occurred to me it's one that has been told, in one form or another, in traditional folk songs through the ages.".

Lopa Kothari with our series Commonwealth Connections, exploring the music of Singapore and Tuvalu, plus Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin live in session. Commonwealth Connections - Feature: Singapore Singapore is home to a very senior group of 'waijiang' musicians originating from Chaozhou in southern China. Their waijiang style of playing was popular in pre-cultural revolutionary China but is now extinct on the mainland. Yet in their small shop house in the Geylang neighbourhood these senior gentlemen still take pride in performing pieces such as 'Little Peach Red' and 'Pipa verse'. Not far away in Chinatown a group of young students from the Siong Leng Musical Association practice Nanyin or 'southern pipes music' - the traditional wooden flute and voice reminisce wistfully of home. Commonwealth Connections - Heritage Feature Formerly known as the Ellice Islands, Tuvalu is a Pacific island nation situated between Hawaii and Australia. Its population of just 11,200 means it the third-least populous sovereign state in the world, and in terms of land mass at ten square miles it's the fourth-smallest country in the world. This impromptu concert at the village also features a rare opportunity to hear the gourd trumpets of Busoga, also a part of the royal music who have been named by UNESCO on the list of Important Cultural Heritages in need of urgent safeguarding. Meanwhile and by contrast in the leafy campus of Kyambogo University in Kampala, we meet one of the two Ennanga (Bow harp) players of Buganda, who learned from court players at the Buganda Royal Palace. This beautiful instrument was played pointing towards the King and the player was his confidante and personal advisor, relating in stories, all the worries and concerns of his people. HERITAGE TRACK - ST KITTS AND NEVIS Athlete Jason Rogers (100m), living and training in Canada, chooses as his Heritage Track an example of the soca music so popular back home in the Caribbean islands of St Kitts and Nevis. We hear a performance by the band recorded at a special event on Waitangi Day (February 6th) at a waterfront concert in Wellington. On this day in 1840 the country's founding document, the Treaty of Waitangi was signed granting Maori people ownership of their lands and properties giving them the same rights as British subjects. World on 3 - Mamane Barka live in session, plus Commonwealth Connections 16
Mary Ann Kennedy with a live session by Mamane Barka, plus Commonwealth Connections from Kenya and Nigeria. COMMONWEALTH CONNECTIONS FEATURE: KENYA Recorded at the African Heritage House outside Nairobi, home to the finest Art Collection in Africa, two generations of the Luo tribe perform the music of their people. Ayub Ogada has reached an international market as a world musician but here he returns to his acoustic roots and the ancient nyatiti lyre. Ayub talks about his nyatiti like a friend, definitely a female friend. He loves his instrument. This is the instrument of the Luo people (famously this is the tribe that President Obama is related to), and he has evolved a softer, gentler sound' to which he adds his distinctive soft sweet voice. In contrast, The Sega Sega Band, also from the Luo people, play Benga music, the style that is at the root of Kenyan pop music from the 60s to the present day. The melodies and rhythms are shaped by the tuning of the nyatiti harp and orutu, (a single string fiddle) but they have modernised the music to create uptempo dance music and transferred the musical lines to the modern guitar. COMMONWEALTH CONNECTIONS HERITAGE TRACK: NIGERIA Nigeria has long been a powerhouse in terms of world music, with artists like Fela Kuti reaching audiences around the globe. Our Commonwealth athlete this week is US Olympian but has chosen to represent Nigeria because her father was born there. And Regina George's choice of music is also very much within the family. The chosen track is "Sweet Sherry" by Eddy Okonta SESSION: MAMANE BARKA Desert bluesman Mamane Barka from Niger joins us in the studio for a live session. Born into a family of Toubou nomads Mamane is a master of the Biram, a rare five-string harp like instrument that can only be played by an initiated few. COMMONWEALTH CONNECTIONS FEATURE: DOMINICA Music is a family affair in La Petite Souffriere, a tiny and remote village high in the hills of Dominica. Isma Alie still works as a farmer cultivating Bay Tree plantations for their oil but also happens to be the island's greatest accordion player. With his son James and grandson Jackson, he keeps alive the traditional Jing-ping music of Dominica for community dances and celebrations. COMMONWEALTH CONNECTIONS HERITAGE TRACK: VANUATU Vanuatu - which literally means freestanding - has only existed as an independent country since 1980, and before that it was known as the New Hebrides and run by Britain and France. This South Pacific archipelago consists of more than eighty islands and lies a thousand miles east of northern Australia, west of Fiji, and southeast of the Solomon Islands. It has a population of less than quarter of a million, but despite that has a strong reputation for table tennis, especially in the shape of Anolyn Lulu whose chosen song is "Freedom" by Vanuatu's Vanessa Quai, as she explained from her island home.

World on 3 - La Chiva Gantiva in Session, Commonwealth Connections 14
Lopa Kothari presents a session with La Chiva Gantiva and Commonwealth Connections from Malta and The Gambia. COMMONWEALTH CONECTIONS MUSIC FEATURE: MALTA Malta's history reads like a Dan Brown novel and the music that has been recorded for this week's feature is infused with Malta's wonderfully diverse historical influences. Musician and composer, Ruben Zahra, takes us on a guided tour of traditional Maltese instruments that span the centuries: from the iz-Zummara, a Maltese reed flute fashioned by children as a toy, to the impressive Maltese bagpipe or iz-Zaqq. Ruben's passion for these instruments, the music and the skills needed to play is helping to prevent their extinction, as happened with the Maltese Lira. This is the world's first studio recording of the Maltese Lira which was lost some 200 years ago but recreated using lithographs and paintings. The tradition of working-class folk song is also being kept alive by the Maltese people in the wine bars of Zejtun. The 'Spirtu Pront' genre of folk song requires singers to verbally duel with improvised lyrics and it has been recorded live in the Ta' Ganna bar with six singers competing for their pride and superiority. They are accompanied by local musicians playing the unusual, horned, Maltese guitar. HERITAGE FEATURE: THE GAMBIA The Gambia is a relatively small slice of land in West Africa on the north and south shores of the river Gambia, and surrounded by Senegal. This week's Commonwealth athlete Suwaibou Sanneh currently lives away from his home town of Brikama studying in the States but he carries the country's music with him as he prepares for the 100 metres sprint, an event for which he holds the Gambian national record. A semi-finalist at the London Olympics, he aims to do even better at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Music from Jaliba Kuyateh and The Kumareh Band SESSION: LA CHIVA GANTIVA La Chiva Gantiva are a group of young Colombian musicians who met in Brussels. Fuelled with a desire to get back to their roots, they started to combine Colombian rhythms with rock, afrobeat and funk. Their new album 'Vivo' is out now on Crammed Discs. We catch them as they are about to embark on their UK tour.

Tinariwen plays material from their new album Emmaar, recorded in another desert, in California, miles away from their homeland because of its political instability. COMMONWEALTH CONNECTIONS FEATURE: SOLOMON ISLANDS Bamboo grows all over the Solomon Islands and provides a perfect natural material for making musical instruments. The 13 piece Waurana Pan Pipe Ensemble makes full use of the bamboo which grows around them to create their joyful, life-affirming sound. Hear the musicians talk about the history of this form of music making and enjoy a special session which captures a raw, hi-energy performance recorded at the Solomon Islands Broadcasting studios in the capital city of Honiara. COMMONWEALTH CONNECTIONS HERITAGE TRACK: Samoa Sia Figiel is a novelist, painter and poet who won the 1997 Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Fiction (SE Asia/Pacific Region). Her choice of Heritage Track LOTA NU'U, sung by the Samoa Teachers' Choir, evokes deep emotions not only in her, but in many Samoans across the world, and is almost an unofficial national anthem, dissolving boundaries and bringing them, and all Pacific peoples, together as children of the great ocean, Moana.

Heritage Track: Grenada Writer Jacob Ross was short-listed for the 2009 Commonwealth Writers' Prize and in 2011 was awarded Grenada's highest award for his contribution to literature. His choice of Heritage Track- the 1960s calypso Dan is the Man in the Van by The Mighty Sparrow- reminds him of growing up in Grenada and the schooling he received in what was then a British colony, full of nonsensical nursery rhymes and images of seasons unknown in the Caribbean. He paints a picture of Grenadians as being both laid-back and determined in their attitude to life, and nurturing high hopes as their star sprinter, Kirani James, heads for Glasgow this summer. Session: The Gloaming Since breaking into the music scene in Ireland in 2011 The Gloaming has been critically acclaimed for their innovative approach, mixing traditional Irish folk roots with the New York contemporary music scene. Irish and American musicians join forces in this five-piece ensemble to produce a fresh mix moving 'the music of Ireland in captivating new directions', according to The New Yorker Magazine. After concerts in London, Amsterdam, Paris and New York last year, The Gloaming showcase some of their latest work in an exclusive session in our studio.

World on 3 - Nuba Nour in Session, Commonwealth Connections 11
Lopa Kothari with new tracks from across the globe, Commonwealth Connections from Cyprus and Ghana, and Nuba Nour in session MUSIC FEATURE: CYPRUS The story of Cyprus's tumultuous past is told through its archaeological treasures, its dusty streets, its food and music. Michalis Tterlikkas was born and lived in the rural village of Kapouti in northern Cyprus until the 1974 Turkish invasion. As a child, he was steeped in the folklore and music of Cyprus and shares with us this lifelong passion for traditional song. Meanwhile, the next generation of musicians is picking up the traditional baton, and a new vigour is brought to the music of Cyprus by the trio 'Monsieur Doumani', who perform on a Nicosia rooftop, overlooking the old city and the green line that divides a nation. HERITAGE TRACK:GHANA Ghana has made quite an impact on the world music scene over the years, not least with Highlife music, perhaps the best known genre to emerge from this west African country - and the Anglo-Ghanaian band Orchestra Jazira delighted audiences here in the UK in the eighties. But for weightlifter Alberta Ampomah, who represented Ghana in the London Olympics and at the Delhi Commonwealth Games and is currently training as a police officer in Accra, the times have clearly moved on. Song "Life" by R2Bees STUDIO SESSION: NUBA NOUR Cairo-based Nubian singers and master frame drummers Nuba Nour perform traditional Nubian music and modern folk songs that express the hardship of the exiled Nubian people after the loss of their Aswan homeland in the 1960s. They perform a song from their debut double A side 7" single, Dessy Lemon to be released on Record Store Day 2014 (19th April 2014).

World on 3 - Mayra Andrade, Commonwealth Connections 9
Lopa Kothari with tracks from across the globe, Commonwealth Connections from Rwanda and Pakistan, and a session with Cape Verdean singer Mayra Andrade. 'Commonwealth Connections' is a BBC Radio 3 landmark 26-part weekly series leading up to the Commonwealth Games in July, featuring music from each of the 53 member states, reflecting the range of music and culture across the whole organisation. Music feature from Rwanda: This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide, which was triggered by the assassination of the Rwandan President on April 6th 1994, and continued for 100 days, with an estimated death toll of more than half a million. Since then Rwanda has seen a remarkable transformation, and the capital Kigali is now a prosperous and thriving capital. Music has played its part in that transformation, and we hear first from Sophie Nzayisenga, who sings and plays the traditional stringed instrument, the inanga. She lost brothers and sisters in the conflict, surviving by hiding in the bush with her father for the hundred days. She is now involved in Rwanda's Cultural Upgrading Initiative, which seeks to promote harmony through traditional music. There is also a session with Gakondo, a traditional group which plays regular concerts at the Hotel Milles Collines, well known around the world as the former UN hotel which became a refuge during the genocide. Heritage Track: Pakistan Kiran Khan is one of Pakistan's first international female swimmers. She talks about the responsibilities and pressures of being a media celebrity and a role-model for other women, and the difficulties of pursuing her chosen sport in a Muslim country. Her uplifting music choice, Jazba-e-Junoon, to himmat na haar by Ali Azmat, reflects the support she's received from her family, particularly her father, who always dreamed that his daughter should fulfil her dreams and become an inspiration to others. Session with Mayra Andrade: She was born in Cuba, but her parents were from Cape Verde, and her main musical influences have always been the songs of these islands. Although she has lived in Paris in recent years, most of her songs are in Cape Verde's local Crioulo language. Her new album 'Lovely Difficult' has already been nominated for a French Victoires de la Musique Award.

Once a reminder of their colonial past, the Kwadril has become a national symbol of the people of St Lucia and this joyful music is the definitive Caribbean ceilidh. Heritage Track from Brunei: The Loneliness of the Short Distance Runner: 400m sprinter Maziah Mahusin was the only female athlete representing her country at the London Olympics 2012; carrying the Bruneian flag at the Opening Ceremony is one of her proudest moments. Since then she has inspired many young girls to run; these days they turn up in crowds at her training sessions to run alongside her. Maziah chooses a track that reminds her of playing with her siblings as a child, Sebarkan ke Seantero dunia by Putri Norizah. World on 3 - With Mary Ann Kennedy. Commonwealth Connections 4 and a session with Eduardo Niebla
Mary Ann Kennedy with tracks from across the globe, a studio session with jazz flamenco guitarist Eduardo Niebla, and part 4 of 'Commonwealth Connections' with music from Barbados and Mauritius. Eduardo Niebla was born in Tangiers in Morocco, and at a young age he fled with his family as a refugee to Spain. He played in a rock band before moving to flamenco and jazz, composing his own pieces and performing in festivals around the world. Commonwealth Connections is a landmark 26-part weekly series leading up to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in July. Featuring musicians and musical events from each of the 53 member states from Antigua to Zambia, the series reflects the Commonwealth's vibrant sounds, as the countries come together for their festival of sport. Commonwealth Connections music feature: The music of Barbados is a curious hybrid of British culture and African rhythms dating back to plantation days, and their strong Calypso song is an aural newspaper of modern life on the Island. Wayne 'Poonka' Willocks explains the tradition of his three man Tuk band of bass drum, snare drum and penny whistle and its connection to Scottish marching bands. Nine-times Calypso Monarch winner, Dr Anthony Carter, better known as The Mighty Gabby, sings of a more contemporary Barbados with his spontaneous and witty songs which tell stories about Bajan life. The songs range widely across hot topics in Bajan culture from the life of fishermen, a protest about sending Bajan troops to war, and of course the Bajan passion for Cricket, told with a twinkle and a more than a hint of sexual double-entendre. Commonwealth Connections heritage track: Christianne Legentil did Mauritius proud by reaching the quarter finals of the 52 kg women's Judo category at the London Olympics, despite coming from an island just 18 kilometres long in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Rodrigues Island lies five hundred kilometres east of the main island of Mauritius, and the Republic of Mauritius is an unusual Commonwealth Country because it is largely French speaking. Christine has chosen some seggae music, a fusion of the local sega music and reggae with an old favourite "Li Tourner" by Alain Ramanisum which has recently been given a new lease of life by local DJs. Producer Roger Short.

The Holy Ethiopian Catholic Church of Zion gather in Soweto to sing songs which blend ancient Zulu melodies and free-flowing phrases with missionary-style harmonies which they say bring them closer to God. A very different kind of township style is found in the music of Madosini, a mouth-bow player and singer living in Cape Town. Now 92 years old, and still performing professionally, she sings stories of life in pre-apartheid rural South Africa, with dramatic overtone-singing and expressive mouth-bow effects. Plus a heritage track from the Bahamas: Bahamian 400m sprinter and Olympic medallist, Chris Brown talks about junkanoo, the music of the annual street parades that resonates with all Bahamians. This music, deeply rooted in the islands' historic ties to Africa, brings back memories for Chris of winning a drumming competition as a child and becoming the lead drummer on his island; of crowds dancing in the streets underneath giant figures of people and animals; and of fires springing up across the islands, lit to warm the drums so that they make the perfect sound. Chris explains how the rhythms of junkanoo are still with him today at international competitions inspiring him to achieve the very best.

World on 3 - Soothsayers with Cornell Campbell in Session
Sounds from around the world, plus a studio session by a new collective made up of the sweet-voiced Jamaican Cornell Campbell and the London-based Afro-dub collective, Soothsayers. With Lopa Kothari. The pairing of sweet-voiced Jamaican Cornell Campbell and the London-based reggae and Afro-dub collective, Soothsayers (led by Robin Hopcraft and Idris Rahman), first took shape through a chance meeting between Cornell Campbell and Hopcraft in Kingston Jamaica early in 2011. A session was arranged at Bunny Lee's recording studio in West Kingston and, within days, the collaboration produced the sweet 'I'll Never Leave', a homage to Cornell's island home of St Elizabeth. Now signed to Strut, the collaboration has recorded a full album in which the collective revisits Cornell's poignant 1970s sufferer's classic 'Jah Jah Me No Born Yah'. Soothsayers also bring their trademark fusion of influences and move Cornell's sound into bold new directions, adding an African groove to the hard-hitting 'Nothing Can Stop Us'. The album carries forward the legacy of Campbell's recordings over the last half century, from his early work with "Coxsone" Dodd at Studio One to '70s and '80s classics with Joe Gibbs, Bunny "Striker" Lee, King Tubby and Winston "Niney" Observer. For Soothsayers, the album is the culmination of ten years leading the London live scene. Comprising musicians that have played with many top artists including Mulatu Astatke, Jerry Dammers' Spatial AKA Arkestra and Hugh Masekela, the band are known for their collaborations with Johnny Clarke, Maxi Jazz (Faithless), Keziah Jones and more, and form the nucleus of the band that backed the London leg of the 'Fela!' musical during 2011.

Her appeal also goes far beyond her fans - the critic of the Manchester Evening News wrote of this concert, "As soon as she started singing, Parveen's extraordinary voice transcended language and cultural barriers. World on 3 - The Mandela Years
Mary Ann Kennedy introduces Andy Kershaw's hour-long tribute to Nelson Mandela, told through the music of the time. With archive interviews and music from Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the praise poet Mzwakhe Mbuli. In the second hour, a studio session with Malian kora player Ballake Sissoko and his quartet plus a round-up of the latest releases from around the globe. We know little of Mandela's personal taste in music, but he certainly recognised the value of music in the struggle against apartheid. Whether it was raising awareness in the international community, or raising morale in South Africa itself, music not only reflected but also influenced the events of the time. Andy Kershaw begins in the 1950s with the music of the Manhattan Brothers, and traces the music of the exiles in the 1960s and 70s, the songs of the activists, the many 'Free Mandela' songs of the 1980s, and the music that celebrated the end of apartheid and the birth of the Rainbow Nation. And Andy recalls the time when he once - accidentally - met Nelson Mandela. Produced by Roger Short with extracts from Andy Kershaw's 1995 Radio 1 documentary produced by Trevor Dann. Programme consultant: Angela Impey, SOAS, University of London "It is music and dancing that make me at peace with the world." - Nelson Mandela.

Lopa Kothari with a profile of Indian film composer A R Rahman, plus highlights from last weekend's Darbar Festival of Indian classical music, including the sitar of Budhaditya Mukherjee and the voice of Sudha Ragunathan. In the first hour of the programme, as part of the Sound of Cinema season, Lopa Kothari meets A R Rahman, who brought about a revolution in Indian cinema in the 1990s with music that introduced fresh elements from Indian traditional and sacred music, plus western pop and classical. Rahman also insisted on a state-of-the-art approach to sound quality, and two decades on, the technical standards in Indian films and in urban Indian cinemas are the equal of anywhere in the world. Emerging from the Tamil film industry, Rahman moved to Bollywood and then went on to popularise Indian film music to a global audience, not least with his song 'Jai Ho' from 'Slumdog Millionaire'. Rahman is still based in the Tamil city of Chennai, and Lopa Kothari visits his studio, and also Rahman's own music conservatory, where he is seeking to train a new generation of orchestral and traditional Indian musicians to perform for Indian films in the future. The second hour is devoted to two performances from the Darbar Festival, with leading performers from both north and south India.

Born in Sarajevo, Bregovic is one of the Balkan's greatest exponents of modern gypsy music and on tonight's show he and members of his band perform an exclusive set of songs featuring on his latest album "Champagne for Gypsies". Goran Bregovic; says, "I come from a culture that has been bypassed by opera and symphonic music. In times when Monteverdi wrote his ORFEO we were still labouring fields with oxen-driven ploughs, breeding cattle and fishing. And traditionally music was played to accompany drinking. My album "Alkohol" is a modest attempt to bridge the gap by making music that can be enjoyed and danced to with or without ALKOHOL." From 1974 until 1989, Bregovic; played lead guitar and was the main creative force behind Bijelo Dugme (White Button). For years they stood as one of the most popular bands in SFR Yugoslavia. These days Bregovic; performs with a large ensemble of musicians: a brass band, bagpipes, a string ensemble, a tuxedo-clad all-male choir from Belgrade, and traditional Bulgarian and Roma singers make up his 40-piece band and orchestra. Since 1998, Bregovic; has been performing all over the world with his Weddings and Funerals Orchestra which consists of 10 people in the small version or 37 in the large.

World on 3 - Cambodian Space Project in Session
Lopa Kothari with the psychedelic sounds of the Cambodian Space Project in session. Based in Phnom Penh, The Cambodian Space Project are fronted by the charismatic Srey Thy and made up of Australian, French and Cambodian musicians who relive the glory days of 1960s Cambodian rock and roll, mixing psych with surf and Cambodian pop. Plus new world music releases. From the band's official biography: The Cambodian Space Project formed back in 2009 when Julien Poulson, an Australian musician and film producer, was in Phnom Penh looking for Cambodian musicians to work with. He stumbled across lead vocalist Srey Thy singing in a karaoke bar and was instantly taken with her. A couple of months later she was part of a band and The Cambodian Space Project was born. Up until that point life had been far from easy for Thy. Born into a poor family in the poverty stricken region of Prey Veng, she began singing in local restaurants at an early age. Thy left home at the age of 18, heading to Phnom Penh in search of a better life, but while there she was kidnapped and nearly forced into a sex trafficking ring. Left tied to a bed with electrical wires around her wrist for hours, an unknown woman freed her and gave her $2.50. Thy fled. Following this defining moment in her life, Thy went on to work odd jobs when and where she could, sending money back to her parents and her young son as often as possible. She now uses her new found fame in the region to raise awareness of human trafficking in Cambodia through workshops and public talks.
